Students at East High School demand a safer route where a classmate was killed

Dozens of students left East High School on Thursday afternoon to participate in the Walk for Ema. On April 28, Ema Cardenas was run over and killed by a car as she crossed the street. The march for Ema began as the school walked out Thursday toward the memorial near the scene where Cardenas died. “My goal is to show my children, my neighbours, my parents, my colleagues that change can happen. All you need is a voice,” said Anna Campos, Ema’s mother. The purpose of the March for Ema is to call on the city to make the stretch of road where she died safer for passers-by. four-lane roads like East University present challenges, but they have options that include reducing speed, adding a crosswalk, adding a red light, and reducing lanes traffic. “We are working with the Iowa Department of Transportation and Des Moines schools to review what improvements could be made,” said City of Des Moines Engineer Steve Naber.
