Schoolteacher, 3 more families get keys to new Habitat homes in Pompano Beach – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports
POMPANO BEACH, FL. (WSVN) – A South Florida teacher has done her homework, and now she’s a proud owner, opening the doors to her dreams with her kids, thanks to hours of sweat and Habitat fir Humanity.
Shataedra Ferguson posed for the cameras alongside her son and daughter outside her brand new Pompano Beach home on Saturday.
She held a big key, marking the moment when this family’s dream of home ownership came true.
The celebratory moment comes after Ferguson worked hard with Habitat for Humanity of Broward. The nonprofit organization helped build four homes in this Pompano Beach community.
When asked how she felt, Ferguson replied, “Excited. I am overwhelmed with joy. I’m just grateful to Habitat for being able to give my kids the future they always deserve. »
Those homes didn’t come easily for the four families at Saturday’s groundbreaking ceremony.
“We don’t give away these houses. They invested, in lieu of a down payment, 300 hours of capital labor to build their home and that of their neighbours,” said Nancy Robin, CEO of Habitat Broward.
Owners also receive support from the community itself.
“Today we celebrate home ownership,” said Robyn Hankerson-Spring of Publix Community Relations.
The Publix spokesperson was on hand to see the hard work pay off.
“Publix has a long history of supporting Habitat for Humanity,” she said, “and today we had the opportunity to celebrate one of the families, the Ferguson family, by dedicating a home to them, and truly celebrating all that is to come in building a foundation for his family.
Publix isn’t the only company lending a hand. Bank of America and Amerant Bank also helped see these homes go up.
The wait was worth it.
7News cameras followed the Ferguson children as they checked out their new bedrooms. They are already looking forward to many happy memories to come.
Children who complete the Habitat program are said to be twice as likely to pursue further education after high school, another reason to celebrate.
As a civics teacher herself, Ferguson has a lesson for other families looking to fulfill their dream.
” Do not abandon. There are opportunities, there are programs like Habitat that will remove those barriers for you and also allow your dreams to come true, just like mine,” she said.
WSVN is a longtime supporter and sponsor of Habitat for Humanity.
