LOUISVILLE, Ky. – WHAS11, in partnership with LG&E and KU, celebrates teachers in our communities who go above and beyond in the classroom with an ExCel award.

We celebrate Dr. Kathleen Mattingly, or Dr. Kat for her students, at J. Graham Brown School.

For the past 12 years, Dr. Kat has taught science at the Brown School. She helped grow the school’s science department while energizing her middle and high school colleagues.

“A big reason she wins this award today and why we honor her is because she is an engaging and inspiring educator,” said Dr. Angela Parsons, director of Brown. “Time and time again, students share that she is one of their best teachers.

Dr. Kat is a dynamic teacher who engages students. One of his students joined the presentation to share his favorite part of learning Dr. Kat.

“I understand the hype,” said elder Alex Billings. “She is, without a doubt, a legend of the Brown school.”

She knows the way to her students’ hearts, saying she will use her $1,000 check to buy classroom supplies, but mostly buy snacks for her hungry students.

“All the hungry students walk through my room during class changes and grab granola bars and popcorn,” Dr. Kat said. “I think I’m dealing with one case a week at this point. I think I have to stop them.”

On behalf of WHAS11, LG&E and KU, congratulations to Dr. Kathleen Mattingly of Brown on your ExCel award!
