NUTP opposes testing for Covid-19 in schools and suggests home self-test instead | Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, December 2 – The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) opposes the introduction of Covid-19 screening tests for primary school students every Wednesday from December 1.
Instead, NUTP General Secretary Wang Heng Suan suggested that students take the home tests conducted by parents and that the parents of students selected to take the test be notified in advance and receive kits. test.
Parents can then submit the test results by uploading images of the results to their respective teachers, ”he said in a statement today.
He added that this was after the NUTP received complaints from teachers advising them that asking teachers to perform RTK-Covid-19 antigen tests for elementary school students is dangerous and puts teachers at risk.
“In fact, teachers do not receive any protective equipment, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), gloves, face shields or, among other things, during screenings. Students are also unable to take the test themselves, ”he said.
“Students should be allowed to go to school the same day if their results are negative, and to quarantine themselves at home if not,” he said.
Wang said this method would help prevent transmission of Covid-19 to teachers and school staff in case students test positive.
He said the NUTP hoped the Ministry of Education would reconsider standard operating procedure (SOP) in the interest of the safety and health of students, teachers and school staff.
On November 27, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said elementary school students would undergo the mandatory Covid-19 screening test on a rotational basis every Wednesday, in line with the national Covid testing strategy -19 (NTS) defined by the Department of Health.
The MOE said rotational testing for Covid-19 is to be implemented every Wednesday, which is a school day.
The MOE has provided the Covid-19 self-test kits to its elementary schools to ensure that drug testing can be performed in accordance with the Covid-19 self-test procedure in the Guidelines for Management and the operation of schools 3.0. – Bernama
