Local schools see effects of teacher shortage

(WKBN) – A national problem is affecting local schools.

Schools across the country are affected by a shortage of teachers. Districts also need substitute teachers.

A Trumbull County administrator tells us the problem is not new and has been going on for years. She says that one of the reasons there are not enough people on the ground.

“Over the past 10 years enrollment in education programs in the state of Ohio has dropped by almost 50%, I think the number is 47%, so definitely if you halve the number graduates, you know we’re going to have fewer teachers, ”said Carlotta Sheets, human resources manager at Trumbull County Education Services Center.

Sheets says Trumbull County has 20 school districts and each district has its own unique circumstances, but says the problem affects schools across the country.

“It is a calling to be a teacher and if we could encourage more students to go into education it would definitely help us find full-time teachers,” Sheets said.

The Stambaugh Charter Academy in Youngstown has seen the effects. The school currently has 12 online vacancies.

A school spokesperson sent us the following statement.

Our school is feeling the effects of the teacher shortage like other schools in the community and across the country.

Every day, our management team reviews the needs of teachers. The posts are staffed with administrative staff and substitute teachers. The school has four deans who can enter a classroom to teach when needed. The management team and staff work together to ensure that the standards of quality education for students are maintained.

The recruitment of new teachers is underway. The school is expanding its pool of applicants as wide as possible. This allows us to attract the greatest number of candidates to find the most qualified educators for our academics. The management team has stepped up its recruiting efforts in a number of ways in an effort to fill its vacant positions.

First News was able to find more job postings for other local schools such as Summit Academy and Valley Christian Schools.

Sheets thinks recruiting more people to become teachers would help solve the problem, but it will take some time.

She says her organization helps people looking to get into education and anyone interested can find out more by going to her website, www.trumbullesc.org.
