IRIS Software Group attacks Grimsby payroll specialist Dataplan

Grimsby’s payroll specialist Dataplan has been acquired by one of the UK’s largest operators in its field.

IRIS Software Group embarked on the city’s success, after being transformed by the accounting firm Forrester Boyd, with former partner Richard Rowell at the helm.

Founded in 1969 and formerly part of the Cosalt group of companies, it became a stand-alone entity three years ago, having grown significantly by developing in-house software solutions to support critical operations.

He specializes in the education, healthcare, hospitality, retail and charity sectors, from a base in Prince Albert Gardens, where 144 people are employed.

Last year IRIS generated nearly £ 200million, serving 120,000 clients with six million monthly payslips, while four million parents use its apps to connect with schools.

The Dataplan agreement follows the acquisitions of payroll companies APS Global and PayPlus, and school management information systems specialist iSAMS, as part of its long-term “build, buy, partner” strategy.

Dataplan itself has over 900 schools using its solutions to manage payroll, HR and pensions. Legacy of the Cosalt business, Grimsby’s last listed entity, Forrester Boyd had acquired what was a back office arrangement in 1989. Until 20 years ago it was a company of only 15 people. But the adaptation of technology and dedicated leadership have accelerated it considerably.

Just before the pandemic outbreak, Dataplan launched Datacode, a fintech spin-off company, while also acquiring Kinetic Marketing & Design – a supplier to the group. Both are included in the undisclosed deal.

Stewart Waddell, Director of Operations at Dataplan, will assume operational management, with Mr. Rowell in a consultant role. Mr Waddell said: “The past 18 months have proven that educators, charities and retailers need the right tools to connect all of their mission-critical processes in one place so they can create a complete picture. of their employees. “From payroll to managing pensions and tracking sick leave, finance teams need to be able to separate data from their silos.

IRIS, with offices in Manchester, Leeds, Peterborough, Stockton and Wigan, was itself acquired in 2018, as part of a joint investment by HG Capital’s Saturn fund and Intermediate Capital Group. The first had invested for the first time in the 42-year-old firm in 2004.
