High school football pick: first round of the playoffs

Bishop Gorman’s Zachariah branch (1) makes a touchdown during a game against Faith Lutheran at Bishop Gorman’s Fertitta Field on Friday March 26, 2021.

The Las Vegas Valley high school football teams are working a short week to prepare for the first round of the playoffs on Thursday – yes, Thursday.

That’s because the state celebrates Nevada Day on the last Friday in October, which means high school football – no matter how big the game is – is increased someday so everyone can take the time off.

The condensed prep week will surely hamper most teams in their game planning as it’s one less day to get to grips with a new opponent’s patterns.

However, that won’t be the case for Desert Pines and the Arbor View host in the Undisputed Game of the Week.

These schools are more than familiar with each other, with Arbor View winning 22-21 in mid-September on a 2 point conversion in the last minute. They have met on several occasions over the past five years, including Desert Pines which knocked Arbor View out of the playoffs in 2019.

The pick column record stands at 120-28 for the season, including 15-2 last week. Let’s continue our momentum:

Desert Pines at Arbor View

The game follows a similar storyline to September 17 with Desert Pines building an early lead and fading late. Arbor View 26, Desert Pines 23

Buttress in Green Valley

Anyone have a room? This match is same – with one exception. Alligators have a slight advantage due to their experience in tight games. Green valley 34, buttress 29

Legacy to freedom

No shame in losing against the reigning state champions. Liberty 48, Heritage 0

Lutheran faith in the home of Bishop Gorman

Another game, another shutout for Gorman. Gorman 52, Lutheran faith 0

Chaparral at the base

Wolves – if they played like they did last week against Clark – are going to make some noise in the playoffs. Basic 38, Chaparral 15

Sierra Vista at Cimarron-Memorial

Sierra Vista enters the week with a 3-7 record. He will end the week with a playoff victory. Sierra Vista 29, Cimarron 27

Durango at the desert oasis

Upset of the week. Durango’s defense escalates to slow down the Diamondbacks. Durango 27, desert oasis 25

Valley vs. SLAM

First playoff game in school history, first playoff win for SLAM. SLAM 33, Valley 12

Eldorado in Virgin Valley

Don’t be surprised if we get a rematch from Virgin Valley-Moapa Valley for the 3A state title. Virgin Valley 50, Eldorado 6.
