Cold, wet weather affects high school spring sports

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Snow, rain and wind have forced schools to cancel spring sports activities this year.

Edgewood High School’s softball program has postponed four games so far in 2022.

Head coach Judie Ryan said weather-related postponements complicate their schedule.

“We end up trying to crush everything we originally planned in February [and] crush that into a smaller and smaller window as we try to get things done,” Ryan said.

They played their first away game on a diamond on Monday.

She said the athletes were looking forward to playing outdoors after COVID-19 canceled so many games over the past three years.

Sun Prairie High School athletics head coach Doug Maughan agreed the cancellations and postponements were impacting their season.

“Then of course you have to find workers and of course buses have been an issue so there are a lot of layers to move a meet,” Maughan said. “It’s not fair, ‘Hey! We want to move this to next Tuesday when the weather is nice!’ Maybe you can move it, maybe you can’t.

Maughan said he’s grateful that Sun Prairie High School has an indoor gymnasium, weight room and swimming pool to make indoor practice possible.
