Cardozo High School Social Studies Teacher Brings Musical Talent to the Classroom – QNS.com

While Phil Ackerman may not have fulfilled his dream of becoming a rock and roll star, he certainly earned the same kind of admiration from his colleagues and students as a social studies teacher at Benjamin High School. Cardozo. Ackerman spent 27 years teaching at the school, nearly his entire teaching career.
Ackerman understands the importance of being able to prepare high school students for the next big steps in their lives. He takes pride in preparing them for the real world, making sure they have the tools they need to thrive for the rest of their academic and professional lives.
Ackerman often applies his musical talents to lessons in his class. He offers songs related to subjects discussed during the lessons, which earned him the admiration of his 34 classes of students.
“I am certainly proud of the way children [at Cardozo High School] feel for me,” Ackerman said. “My students are excited to see me walking down the halls. It’s nice to be loved.
Ackerman not only works as a teacher at Cardozo High School, he has also volunteered at Kempo Martial Arts in Hicksville. The students he helped there range in age from four to 62.
Considering the large number of students who attend Cardozo High School, it’s refreshing to know that there are teachers like Ackerman who were able to make such a big impression on them.
According to Ackerman, he sees the classroom as his stage and the students as an audience that attends the performances that are his lessons. In a way, he really is living his dream of being a rock star.
“I get my stage every day,” Ackerman said. “Teaching these students is what allows me to perform.”
